NARRATIVE | Hair straightening became so popular that it evolved from a style option to a norm, and tightly coiled, kinky hair for women became a shameful taboo. So cutting away years of chemically-straightened hair down to the untreated roots can be a little frightening as well as liberating for black women. I cut my hair in 1999 and have not chemically straightened it since. |
