NARRATIVE | In 2000, I bought D’Angelo’s “Voodo” album as soon as it was released. I played it constantly as I completed this piece. Around that time there was a surge of new R&B music that was hefty and serious, strongly influenced by the masters of funk, blues, and Motown R&B. When I displayed the finished piece, some were offended… “So, you’re saying that D’Angelo is as good as Jimmy Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Stevie Wonder and James Brown?” My reply, “No. D’Angelo is in the middle, listening to everyone else.” |
